The CBI has questioned former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for the 14th consecutive day. The investigating agency has questioned him for more than 140 hours. He is being questioned in connection with the investigation into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on the morning of August 9. Apart from this, a corruption case has also been registered against him.

CBI officials also searched the residence of Sandeep Ghosh last Sunday and questioned him. He was seen roaming inside the CGO Complex in Salt Lake at around 10.45 am, where the agency has its eastern regional headquarters. An official said that the first of the three teams of the investigating agency, which is investigating financial irregularities, reached the morgue of RG Kar Hospital.

They inquired about the infrastructure, the protocols involved in safekeeping of bodies and conducting post-mortems. The five-member team spoke to doctors and staff of the hospital, including the head of the forensic department and current vice principal Dr. Saptarshi Chatterjee. The investigation was initiated after allegations of corruption were leveled by the hospital’s former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali.

It alleges financial malpractices such as smuggling of unclaimed bodies in the hospital, corruption in disposal of bio-medical waste, nepotism in construction tenders etc., which were committed during the tenure of Sandeep Ghosh as principal. A second CBI team from Nizam Palace simultaneously searched the hospital’s store room, where medical and purchase related records are kept.

On Thursday, another CBI team went to the chest department on the third floor of the hospital’s emergency building, where the victim was on duty that night, and inspected the crime scene. Nurses and other hospital staff were spoken to there. So far in the investigation, the CBI has been able to arrest only one accused, Sanjay Roy, who is currently in judicial custody.

18 days have passed since the CBI took over the investigation on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, but many questions about this heinous crime have not been answered yet. Like was it rape or gang rape? However, the investigation so far has revealed that Sanjay Roy has committed this crime alone. Because all the evidence found so far is against him.
