Junior doctors from various medical colleges on Tuesday took out a rally to Kolkata Police Headquarters Lalbazar demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and even after this they remained on BB Ganguly Street, even though they were stopped before proceeding further. Later Police Commissioner Goyal met the junior doctors. The meeting between the Commissioner and the doctors lasted for about three hours.

The students handed over a memorandum to him demanding his resignation. After a long discussion, the police commissioner said that if the concerned officials want to remove him, he has no objection. According to the junior doctors, they handed over a copy of the memorandum to him, which was accepted by the commissioner. They believe that the incident that night was a failure of the police. The commissioner said that if the higher officials accept their demands, he will either accept it or resign.

During this, doctor-actor Kinjal Nand said that he (police commissioner) could not give any answer about what happened on 9th, 12th and 14th. Therefore our movement will continue. From 9 o’clock tomorrow night. We will turn off the lights of the house and come out on the streets with candles. He appeals and requests that you come down and form a human chain.

Let us tell you that before this, along with doctors, many common people and students of other educational institutions also stood on BB Ganguly Street, about half a kilometer away from Lalbazar, throughout the night on Monday. A large contingent of Kolkata Police officers remained on guard on the other side of the barricade, which was tied to the railing with chains and padlocks.

The junior doctors had placed a replica of a spinal cord and a red rose on the barricade. They claimed that the replica was to emphasise the duty of the police force to protect citizens. One of the protesting doctors told PTI, “This was not in our plan. We did not know that the Kolkata Police was so scared that it would put up a 9-feet high barricade to stop us. Our agitation will continue till we get permission to reach Lalbazar and meet the CP. We will sit here till then.”

Later, Kolkata Police Additional Commissioner of Police (II) Santosh Pandey along with other officials reached the spot with force and talked to the doctors and pacified them. However, the talks did not yield any fruitful result as the doctors continued with their demand to march to the Kolkata Police Headquarters and submit their delegation demanding the resignation of the Police Commissioner. Which was later accepted.

Earlier, the doctors started their march towards Lalbazar at around 2 pm on Monday. They carried placards with pictures of Goyal and demanded his resignation. They also burnt the effigy of the police commissioner after being stopped at BB Ganguly Street. They also raised slogans demanding severe punishment for the culprits behind the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The doctors have alleged that the police did not take adequate steps while investigating the rape and murder of the young doctor on August 9, even though the Calcutta High Court had handed over the case to the CBI.
