Protesting junior doctors have withdrawn their indefinite hunger strike in the Kolkata RG Kar Medical College case. The decision was taken by junior doctors after an important meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday evening. Doctors say they will continue to exercise in other ways.
A general medical strike launched in the state on Tuesday was also withdrawn after doctors withdrew their strike. However, doctors said he will continue to exercise in a different way over the next few days.
Debashish Halder, one of the junior doctors, said, “Today in the meeting with the chief minister, we were assured of some instructions, but we did not find that the body language of the state government was Positive.”
He said that the common people fully support our fasting. They, along with the parents of our late sister (a victim of RG Kar Hospital), asked us to withdraw our hunger strike keeping in view our deteriorating health condition…so we withdraw our ‘fast until death’. On Tuesday, the health department’s total lockdown will also be lifted.
Doctors started protesting on August 10
On the morning of August 9, the body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. She was raped and murdered, and the autopsy report confirmed this. Following the brutal incident, the junior doctor insisted on seeking justice for his colleagues and began boycotting work on August 10 in protest.
Kolkata police have arrested a civil volunteer named Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case of a female train doctor. In this case, the CBI conducted a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy. The central probe agency has also conducted multiple rounds of interrogation against Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College. The CBI is interrogating Sandeep Ghosh, Sanjay Roy and one of his close associates, along with four medical students of RG Kar, who were arrested on the night of August 8-9 Hospital duty. Following the directions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI has taken over the investigation of the case.
