Junior doctors in the uproar over the rape-murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata have reached the State Secretariat to meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The meeting was convened to resolve the ongoing deadlock following this heinous incident. During this time, doctors have raised demands including justice for victims, the removal of Health Minister NS Nigam and improved safety for health workers.
“We are looking forward to a positive outcome from this meeting,” said Debash Halder, one of the excited junior doctors. The doctors, who have been on a hunger strike until their death since October 5, have warned the government that if their demands are granted If not satisfied, they will go on strike across the state. Six doctors who went on hunger strike recently have been hospitalized due to deterioration in health conditions, and the other eight doctors are still on indefinite hunger strike.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee sent her chief secretary and home secretary to meet the agitated doctors on Saturday. During this period, he spoke to them on the phone and urged them to end their hunger strike. He said most of his demands had been accepted and he asked for an additional three to four months to meet the remaining demands. The junior doctor spoke to him before agreeing to meet and arriving for the meeting.
It comes after agitated junior doctors held a large rally on Sunday demanding a speedy investigation into the case and made 10 demands. A large number of people joined him to put pressure on the West Bengal government over the matter. Addressing the rally, the doctors said their agitation would intensify if their demands, including the removal of state health minister NS Nigam, were not met. He was also joined by film and television celebrities.
West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant and Home Secretary Nandini Chakraborty met junior doctors who protested on Saturday. One doctor said they will be forced to go on strike across the state on October 22 if their demands are not met by Monday. He had said, “We want Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to sit down for discussion and fulfill all our demands. If this does not happen, we will be forced to initiate a big agitation.”

Aaj Tak has learned exclusive details of the chargesheet, in which citizen volunteer Sanjay Roy is alleged to have committed the crime. Semen samples taken from the victim’s body were sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for testing. It was revealed that the semen belonged to Sanjay Roy, who is currently in CBI custody. He was earlier arrested by police.
The CBI claimed that the CFSL report had confirmed that the semen belonged to Sanjay Roy. The charge sheet shows that Sanjay Roy was proven guilty of the crime based on extensive physical evidence, circumstantial evidence and forensic reports. Kolkata police arrested him within 24 hours of the incident. The charge sheet stated that the hair found at the crime scene was sent to a laboratory for testing and matched that of the main accused Sanjay Roy.
