This horrific incident took place on the night of 8-9 August, when the body of a trainee doctor was found from ‘Radha Gobind Kar Medical College’, Kolkata. The age of this doctor was 31 years, who was on night duty that day along with three other doctors. Of these, two doctors were from the chest medicine department and one was a trainee. One employee was from the house staff of the hospital. That night all these doctors and staff had dinner together.
After this, the female doctor went to the seminar hall of the hospital to sleep at around 2 o’clock in the night. After this, Sanjay Roy came to the seminar hall from the back side and first brutally murdered the girl and then raped her. The most important thing is that this accused was neither from the hospital staff nor was he a relative of any patient. He used to work as a civic volunteer for Kolkata Police.
Whenever a policeman was admitted to this medical college, he was present as an assistant to bring his medicines and to provide other help to him. But on the day this incident occurred, the accused had not come to the hospital for any work. That day, he came to the back part of the hospital to drink alcohol and after drinking alcohol, he watched obscene videos on his mobile phone. Then the crime was committed.
After this, at around 4.45 in the morning he was seen coming out of the seminar hall. After committing the crime, the accused tried to tamper with the evidence. Police have found evidence which shows that the accused had tried to wash blood stains from the crime scene. After going back home, he also washed his clothes. A case has been registered against the accused under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of BNS.
Sanjay Roy, the main accused in this case, was a member of the Police Welfare Society. He had reached Salua in Kharagpur from August 5 to August 8 to attend a meeting. Sanjay Roy was present there claiming to work as a Civic Assistant.
What happened on 8th August?
Morning: Sanjay Roy returned to Kolkata from Salua.
Afternoon: After coming to Kolkata, he disguised himself as a broker and went to get a patient admitted to the hospital. The patient was admitted.
11 pm: Sanjay returned to the same building of the hospital to see the patient and get an X-ray done. At that time the patient’s family members were also present with him.
1 pm: Sanjay returned to the same building to help another patient who was to undergo surgery. After rendering help, he returned from the hospital premises at around 1:30 pm.
3 pm: Sanjay was also seen drinking alcohol with a relative of the patient behind RG Kar Hospital. He paid money to help the person accompanying the patient and booked an Uber bike so that he could return home.
After 3 pm: Sanjay went to the third floor of the Chest Medicine Building. Within a few minutes, he reached the seminar hall, where the female doctor was resting. Sanjay allegedly raped and murdered the female doctor there. After about 40-45 minutes, he walked out of the seminar hall.
Morning events:
4:37 am: Sanjay was seen coming out in the CCTV footage. He came back to the barrack with his bike and slept.
Morning: Kolkata Police saw Sanjay’s suspicious activities in the CCTV footage and picked him up from the barrack and took him to the hospital. After a day-long interrogation, Sanjay was arrested late in the evening.

The accused pleaded to be hanged
The accused is now pleading to be hanged. He confessed to his crime and during interrogation said, “Yes, I have committed a crime, hang me.” Police investigation revealed that accused Sanjay Roy had a tendency to fight for a long time. During interrogation, he also confessed to attacking his mother, sister and wife.
Kolkata Police has seized two mobile phones of both the victim and the accused and the process of extracting data from the accused’s phone is going on soon. CCTV footage from RG Kar Hospital has been collected for investigation. The authorities have not only interrogated the hospital staff, including doctors, but also interrogated the five policemen deployed so that any necessary information could be gathered regarding the crime.
DNA sample sent for forensic investigation
