The CBI has made a major revelation in the rape-murder case of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Two days after the arrest of the main accused, Sanjay Roy, his clothes and belongings were recovered, the investigating agency said. The Kolkata police dragged their feet even though they knew that the items belonging to the accused could be crucial in establishing his role in the crime.

On August 10, a day after the incident, the Kolkata police arrested the main accused, Sanjay Roy, based on CCTV footage. He was seen entering the hospital’s seminar hall at 4:03 am on the day of the incident. A CBI official said, “The accused’s role in the crime was exposed, but the police unnecessarily delayed for two days to confiscate his clothes and belongings.”

Following the order of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation of the case on August 14. Earlier, the Kolkata Police was investigating the matter. In this case, the CBI arrested former school principal Sandeep Ghosh and Tala police station in-charge Abhijeet Mandal. Both were accused of destroying evidence related to the incident and diverting the investigation. Even during the CBI investigation, both parties did not cooperate.

A police officer said there is a possibility of conspiracy between the main accused and his co-accused. The two accused will be interrogated face to face from CCTV footage of Tara police station, crime scene and medical college. Mobile data extracted from their mobile phones will also be examined to detect a possible conspiracy in this case from the conversations between them.

On Tuesday, the CBI extended the custody of Dr Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mandal, in-charge of Tala police station, for three days. The CBI told the court that the two had not cooperated with the authorities during questioning, necessitating the extension of their custody. The investigating agency also said that no evidence of gang rape with the woman doctor has been found so far.

The CBI lawyer said his officials have not found any evidence to prove the direct involvement of Sandeep Ghosh and Abhijit Mandal in the rape or murder of the doctor. The two arrested persons were said to have spoken to each other several times on the day when the body of the doctor was fished out. From the call details between the two, the CBI came to know that the two had called certain numbers several times on the day.

Following this, the court extended the CBI remand of Sandeep Ghosh and Abhijit Mandal for three days till September 20. The CBI said that Abhijeet Mandal, in-charge of Tala police station, was arrested on charges of tampering with evidence, delay in filing FIR, etc. The officer was detained after he failed to give satisfactory answers during interrogation by CBI officials.

The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Sandeep Ghosh on September 2 in a case of hospital financial irregularities. “We believe there is a big conspiracy behind this crime,” said a CBI lawyer. The Tara police station received information about the incident at 10 am, but the police reached the spot at 11 am. The FIR was registered after 11:30 pm. The OC of the police station had several conversations with Sandeep Ghosh that day.

Abhijeet Mandal’s lawyer told the court: “The portion against my client is bailable. There are allegations against him like delay in filing FIR on the spot. The department can investigate him in this regard but cannot arrest him for this mistake. Whenever CBI called him after issuing notice, he fully cooperated. My client was admitted to hospital but he reappeared.”
