The 42nd edition of the historic domestic football tournament Santosh Trophy is underway with former champions Kerala successfully advancing to the final round. Kerala defeated Puducherry 7-0 in the final match of Group H to advance to the final round. Kerala, which has won the Santosh Cup seven times so far, also showed its best performance this time, winning all the group matches and securing a spot in the final round with nine points. Sajeesh E and Naseeb Rahman scored two goals each for Kerala team against Puducherry, while Gani Ahmed Nigam, Christy Davis and Shijin T scored one goal each.
Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir also reached the finals
Apart from Kerala, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir also successfully qualified for the 2024 Santosh Trophy finals. In the Group A match, Jammu and Kashmir defeated Ladakh 5-0 to advance to the Santosh Trophy final. In Assam, Meghalaya in Group E drew 1-1 with the host nation and advanced to the finals. In the other match of this group, Arunachal Pradesh defeated Nagaland 4-3 and achieved its first victory.
Group H railway team ranked second
Although Kerala has been confirmed to enter the final round of Group H, the Railways team in the same group defeated Lakshadweep 1-0 to secure the second place in the group. Pawan Vijay scored a goal for Railways in the 57th minute of the match to lead the team to victory. Punjab defeated Himachal Pradesh 7-0 with Kamaldeep scoring 3 goals and Tanveer Singh, Jaginder Singh, Jang Bahadur Singh and Gaurav scoring 1 goal each.
