Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal got major relief from the Supreme Court. The court extended the interim order against two persons in a defamation case over alleged deletion of names from the Delhi electoral roll. The Supreme Court has extended the stay of trial court proceedings by four weeks. Rajeev Babbar, the leader of the BJP who filed the complaint, sought time to file a reply. The court gave him four weeks to deal with the matter.
In September this year, Arvind Kejriwal was frustrated by the High Court in the matter. Anup Kumar Mendiratta’s court has refused to quash the defamation suit against him. Additionally, Kejriwal’s petition challenging the defamation case filed by Delhi BJP leader Rajiv Babar was also dismissed.
The High Court stayed the hearing before the trial court.
Kejriwal sought to quash the defamation case pending before the trial court. The court adjourned the trial court hearing. This matter was exposed in 2018. Kejriwal was chief minister at the time. He published a post on social media platform X in December 2018. Delhi’s Agarwal community is said to have 800,000 voters. Of these, around 400,000 votes were cast by the BJP.
Arvind Kejriwal made this claim
In this way, Kejriwal claimed that the BJP had secured 50% of the votes of the Agarwal community to remove it from the list. He also claimed that earlier this vote belonged to the BJP but these people were angry over demonetisation and GST. Hence, the votes of the BJP were deducted. In response, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rajiv said Kejriwal’s statement damaged the credibility of the BJP. He filed a defamation suit against Kejriwal and other Aam Aadmi Party leaders.
