October 28, 2024: Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar recently sparked controversy by selling 50 per cent stake in his revered production house Dharma Productions to Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla discussed. The business move quickly became a hot topic on social media, with many questioning why Johar decided to give away half of the company. Karan indirectly responded to the speculations by sharing a cryptic message on Instagram, hinting at the nature of competition and cooperation: “Competition happens at the bottom. People at the top are collaborating.”

News of the sale was met with mixed reactions from fans and industry insiders. Actor Jaaved Jaaferi humorously came up with an interesting title for Dharma’s future project and quipped, “Next film: Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Serum.” Others also joined in with titles like “Covi Khushi Covi Gham” and ” Lighthearted titles like Vaccine Ke Baad Se Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”.

Poonawalla-Dharma Agreement
Under the new partnership, Poonawalla-based Serene Productions will invest over Rs 1,000 crore in Dharma for a 50 per cent stake, while Karan Johar retains the remaining ownership. According to an official statement, the alliance aims to leverage Dharma’s legacy and Poonawalla’s strategic insights to create innovative, high-quality content for global audiences.

However, the banner’s success has been mixed in recent years, with some films underperforming at the box office, fueling speculation about the timing of this new partnership.
