Kanpur Balwant Incident: Court sentenced then Inspector-General of Police and Head of Post to 5 years in jail

The court on Thursday delivered its verdict in the famous Balwant incident in Kanpur. The court sentenced Inspector Shivli Rajesh Singh, then in-charge of the police station, and Gyan Prakash Pandey, then in-charge of Maitha outpost, to five years in prison. Let us tell you that Balwant died on December 12, 2022, in police custody.

Based on a complaint filed by the deceased Balwant’s family, a case was registered against eight policemen, including the SOG team. In this case, the court only last week acquitted the person in charge of SOG and his entire team. Meanwhile, the court also sentenced Inspector Shivli Rajesh Singh, then in-charge of police station, and Gyan Prakash Pandey, then in-charge of Maitha outpost, to five years’ imprisonment each. Apart from this, a fine of Rs 10,000 per person has also been imposed.

Balwant died at Raniya police station in Kanpurdhat. Balwant died due to police beating. An autopsy found that there were more than 30 injuries on the body.

Information shows that the uncle of the deceased, Angad Singh, has filed a murder report against eight people, including SOG chief Prashant Gautam and his team, Maitha outpost chief Gyan Prakash Pandey, and Shivli Kotwal Rajesh Singh. Accused police of assaulting him.
