December 12, 2024: New Delhi: Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has spoken out about Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash’s suicide, condemning his estranged wife and her family for allegedly misusing legal provisions. The 34-year-old techie left a 24-page suicide note and an 84-minute video accusing his wife of harassment and blackmail, sparking nationwide outrage.

Harassment Charges
Atul Subhash’s death has reignited debate about the impact of legal abuse and marital disputes on mental health. His suicide note revealed long-running legal battles and financial demands. According to Subhash, his wife was receiving alimony of Rs 40,000 per month despite working at Accenture and earning her own income. She allegedly demanded an additional fee of Rs 2-4 lakh and filed multiple legal cases against him, his parents and his brother, including allegations of dowry harassment, unnatural sex and even murder.

Although his wife withdrew some cases, the relentless legal pressure left Subhas exhausted. His family claimed that he had to travel between Bengaluru and Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh more than 40 times to address various allegations leveled by his wife and her family.

Subhash’s father, Pawan Kumar, shared the emotional and logistical strain on his son. “He told us that the conciliation court staff did not act according to the law or even the rules of the Supreme Court. Family members revealed that Subhash sent his brother an email detailing his decision at around 1 a.m. on the day of his death. “We can’t express how nervous our son was,” his father added.

Ranaut’s comments, particularly her admission that “99 per cent of the time” men are at fault, sparked polarizing discussions on social media. While some praised her for addressing both sides of the issue, others criticized her for downplaying alleged abuses of the law in Subhas’ case.
The actor-turned-politician also criticized the broader implications of “fake feminism,” arguing that such misuse of the law not only destroys families but also delegitimizes the struggles of real victims.

As Subhash’s video and suicide note went viral, police registered a case of abetment to suicide against his wife Nikita Singhania, her mother, brother and uncle. Investigation is ongoing, Bangalore Deputy Commissioner of Police Shivakumar confirmed the tragic incident.
Subhas’ case highlights the urgent need for legal reform to ensure that both men and women are protected from systemic abuse while addressing the emotional and financial toll that marital disputes can take on families.
“This is not just about one person losing his life. This is about systemic failures that force individuals into unimaginable despair,” said a legal expert involved in the case.
