In 2010, news reports in Karnataka stated that a Dalit woman was murdered in Gopalpur village of Tumkur district and a court sentenced 21 defendants to life imprisonment. On June 28, 2010, a Dalit woman named Daba Honamma was murdered in Gopalpur village in Chikkanayakanahalli taluka of Tumkur district. Now, 14 years later, the local court sentenced 21 defendants from the same village to life imprisonment. Besides, a fine of Rs 13,500 was also imposed on each accused.
Let us tell you that on June 28, 2010, a Dalit woman named Daba Honamma was stoned to death in Gopalpur village of Chikkanayakanahalli taluka in Tumkur district. In this regard, a case of murder and caste violence was registered at Handanakur police station against 27 persons.
Six of the 27 defendants died
DSP Shivarudraswamy, who was investigating the case at the time, submitted a chargesheet to the court and the charges against all 27 accused were confirmed during the hearing. Now, Judge Nagi Reddy of the Third High District and District Court in Tumkur sentenced the accused to life imprisonment. Currently, 6 of the 27 defendants have died. As a result, 21 defendants were convicted. Among the 21 people, 2 were women and 19 were men.
When 98 people were sentenced to life imprisonment together
Earlier, 98 accused were sentenced to life imprisonment in the arson case on a Dalit street in Makumbi village of Koppal district, which made news across the state. Subsequently, the Dharwad High Court stayed the execution of the sentence and granted bail to the accused.
