JPC report on waqf bill ready, opposition MPs create ruckus; says – tenure should be extended

Religion and Religious Funds Amendment: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) held its last meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Thursday. JPC chairman Jagdambika Pal said the JPC report on the waqf bill is ready. Meanwhile, opposition MPs demanded an extension of the JPC’s term. Many opposition MPs had telephonic conversations with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on the issue.

After the parliamentary committee meeting, opposition MPs demanded an extension of the JPC’s term. Opposition MPs claimed that the committee chairman did not listen to their views and acted arbitrarily. Meanwhile, opposition lawmakers are likely to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla soon on the issue. Meanwhile, Jagdambikar Pal said the committee will submit its report on time.

Opposition MPs to meet Om Birla on Monday

Opposition MPs included in the committee will meet the Speaker of the Lok Sabha to extend the tenure of the Judiciary Committee constituted under the amendment bill to the Religious Endowments Act. It was said that all opposition MPs included in the committee will meet the Lok Sabha Speaker at 10.30 am on Monday. Meanwhile, the winter session of Parliament begins on Monday. It is believed that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill will be introduced in the House during this session.

Regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, JPC president Jagdambika Pal said: “Our report is ready and we will discuss it clause by clause.” Here, the opposition also said the same (demanding extension of JPC’s tenure)…any member or Opposition parties are free to meet with the Speaker. They are working to extend the term of the JPC.

5 JPC sessions, 29 hours of Q&A

In fact, at the cabinet meeting, the proposal for 40 amendments to the waqf law was approved. The chairman of the JPC said that the JPC has held five meetings so far. A total of over 29 hours of questions and answers were conducted on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill. 25 meetings were also held with all stakeholders. A report has been prepared in this regard and will be tabled in the House of Representatives with your cooperation.

Regarding the opposition members’ demand for extension of the JPC’s term, he said they were independent and could submit their opinions to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. The JPC president said whatever decision Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla takes in this regard, we can accept it. The deadline for the JPC is November 29 to submit its report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
