“Joker: Pas de Deux,” the highly anticipated follow-up to 2019’s “Joker,” opened to mixed box office results, raking in an estimated $81.1 million at the international box office over the weekend. Although the film topped the global box office with $121.1 million worldwide, it faced challenges domestically, grossing a relatively low $40 million.

Warner Bros., which is financing the film, is under pressure because the film has a production budget of $200 million, much higher than the $65 million of the original “Joker.” Much of the budget increase can be attributed to the star-studded cast and director, which includes Joaquin Phoenix, who reprises his role as Arthur Fleck, and Lady Gaga, who reprises her iconic role as Harley Quinn. Despite its star power, the film received lackluster reviews, earning a disappointing D movie rating from audiences, reflecting the critical response.

International box office performance
“Joker: Folie à Deux” performed better overseas, playing on 25,788 screens in 76 markets. Notable international revenue included the UK at $8 million, Germany at $6.9 million, Italy at $5.6 million, Mexico at $5.5 million and France at $5 million. The film will be released in Japan this week, followed by China on October 16, which should significantly boost its overall revenue.

In India, the film got off to a strong start, earning 650 million rupees (approximately $784,000) in its three days of release. However, the deal experienced a slowdown over the weekend, adding 1.52 billion rupees on day 4, taking its total revenue to 9.3 million rupees (approximately $1.1 million), sacnilk.com reported.

a difficult act
The original “Joker” was a huge success, grossing $335 million at the domestic box office and $743 million at the international box office, setting a record for the highest-grossing R-rated film. That title was later replaced by “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which grossed $1.32 billion worldwide. The mixed reviews for the sequel were in stark contrast to such high expectations.

Long before the polarizing response to Joker: Pasade , director Todd Phillips hinted that he would no longer be making comic book movies. “It’s fun to play two movies in a sandbox like this, but I think we’ve said what we want to say in this world,” he told Variety in August.

As the film continues to roll out internationally, all eyes are on how it performs in key markets like Japan and China, which could determine whether Warner Bros. can break even or make a profit.
