The rally was sparked by offensive comments made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe during a Trump event, which called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage,” sparking widespread outrage.

Lopez addressed the crowd, emphasizing that the offensive behavior was not limited to Puerto Ricans but included all Latinos and anyone with a sense of decency. “It wasn’t just Puerto Ricans who were offended that day. It was every Latino in this country. It’s human nature and anyone with any decent character,” she said, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of divisive rhetoric.
During her 15-minute speech, she expressed pride in her identity as a Puerto Rican American and emphasized her roles as a mother, sister and entertainer. “I’m Puerto Rican, yes I was born here and we are Americans,” she affirmed, jokingly adding, “You can’t spell American without Rican” to emphasize the role of Puerto Ricans in American culture importance.
Lopez praised Harris’ policies, including expanding the child tax credit, which she said would benefit all Americans regardless of their background. “This is about helping you succeed. This is about us. All of us. No matter what we look like, who we love, who we admire, or where we come from,” she asserted, inspiring the audience.
The crowd reacted enthusiastically as she criticized Trump for fueling division, underscoring the impact her support will have in the tight race for the upcoming election on Nov. 5. With Puerto Rico accounting for about 1.78% of the U.S. population, Lopez’s support is significant as the election approaches. Her passionate call for unity and character in leadership resonated with many, reinforcing the importance of inclusive representation in politics.
