Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced to step down from his post next month. He will resign as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in September.

Kishida said during the press conference that he will not contest the election for the post of party president to be held next month. In Japan, the president of the ruling party is elected Prime Minister. With this announcement, it has now been decided that the country is going to get a new Prime Minister soon.

PM Kishida said that the party needs a new beginning. There is a need to tell people through internal party elections that the Liberal Democratic Party will bring change.

By-elections were held in many cities of Japan last April. LDP had to face defeat in this election. Even after this defeat, there were demands for Kishida’s resignation. In this way, there was pressure on Kishida to step down for a long time. Let us tell you that elections are to be held in Japan next October.

Why did this decision have to be taken?

The ruling LDP in Japan has been continuously in controversies. Party-related scams, controversy over political funding and Kishida’s continuously declining approval ratings are being considered as the reasons. In July, Kishida’s approval rating was below 20 percent. This is the eighth consecutive month when Kishida’s rating has been so low. In 2021, PM Kishida’s rating was around 65 percent.

Let us tell you that Kishida took over the post of Prime Minister of Japan in October 2021. Kishida had replaced Yoshihide Suga.
