Zainapora area in Shopian district is known as the land of waterfalls. There are apple orchards here and there are numerous waterfalls. In 2014, this assembly was known as Wachi. After delimitation, its name has been changed to Janapora Assembly. People voted in large numbers here. People want to vote for change.

A total of 10 candidates are in the fray for the Jainapora seat. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rebel and former Wachi MLA Ejaz Ahmed Mir is contesting as an independent candidate. NC has fielded Shaukat Hussain Ghani, Apni Party has fielded Gauhar Hussain Wani and PDP has fielded GH Mohi-ud-din Wani.

A four-cornered contest is going on here. PDP rebel and former councillor Ajaz Ahmed Mir has the support of Jamat. Ijaz, a councillor from Andhra district, had bagged 42.47 per cent votes in the 2014 assembly elections. PDP did not give him tickets for the new seat.

The road for NC and PDP in this seat is not going to be easy either. Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti won from Wachi seat in 2008. In the 2002 elections, CPIM’s Khalil Naik defeated PDP’s Ghulam Hasan Bhat with a margin of 0.56 per cent votes. In such a scenario, there will be a tough contest between the three independent candidates and the party candidates in this seat this time.
