Rebel Congress MP Satish Sharma defeated BJP candidate Rajiv Sharma by nearly 7,000 votes to become an independent from the Chhamb assembly seat and has now joined the National Conference government. He has been included in Omar Abdullah’s new cabinet. Sharma was appointed as Jammu region’s representative in Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government. His move is seen as important in the BJP areas of Jammu. Sharma, the only non-BJP MLA from Jammu region, joining the NC government has become a cause for celebration in the Chhamb constituency. His supporters celebrated by handing out candy, firecrackers and dancing to music.

“I thank Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for providing proper representation to Jammu region and for working towards bridging the gap between the two regions,” Satish Sharma said after taking the oath. His father Madan Lal served as Jammu Poonch district councilor twice and provincial councilor thrice. His uncle Sham Lal Sharma is currently a BJP MP.
