What did Jaishankar say about the special economic model?
Jaishankar cited a 1947 statement by US policymaker John Foster Dulles that the then-government was dead wrong, but which US policymakers have maintained for decades. He said I often ask myself whether Dulles was entirely wrong. He found the answer in Pagnaglia’s book.
He said there are strong ideological motivations for promoting India’s special economic model. This belief changes from time to time, but never completely.
Jaishankar said that the fundamental reason for this situation is that socialism is the only way to fight imperialism. The idea is mainly aimed at heavy industry. For this reason, Panagariya defined it as the Nehru model of development.
The situation in India is more complicated than before
Jaishankar said that India has benefited from opening up in the past 33 years, but today the situation is more complex than ever before. He said that opening up cautiously is a good approach. At the same time, he said while talking about self-reliance, this should not be seen as protectionism but a call to strengthen national security and think and work independently.
