Jaishankar Italy conveys a message to China that India has a clear position on Indo-Pacific issues

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Relations between the two countries have improved following their meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting in Russia. After this meeting, the two countries reached an agreement to end the tensions that emerged after the conflict in Galwan. Since then, the two armies have now restored their 2020 SAC status. However, despite this, India remains wary of China.

During the G7 meeting in Italy, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar discussed strengthening India’s Indo-Pacific policy. The foreign minister spoke openly about India’s foreign policy while expounding his views at the meeting. During this period, he also emphasized on strengthening India’s cooperation with existing countries. Jaishankar said that there is a wave of change in the Indo-Pacific region today. New partnerships continue to emerge, and opportunities for cooperation are created amid challenges. At this time, regional and global cooperation are more important than ever.

Jaishankar talked about six key points when explaining India’s Indo-Pacific policy:

  • Focus on maritime security: Measures need to be taken to ensure the safety of sea lanes in the region and to ensure that international maritime law is respected.
  • Strengthening supply chains: Strengthening coordination among partner countries to achieve seamless supply chains for regional and global trade.
  • Semiconductor and technology cooperation: joint research on emerging technologies such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and network security.
  • Respect international law: abide by international rules and norms, maintain regional stability, and safeguard common interests.
  • Provide more options: Provide diverse cooperation and partnership opportunities for Indo-Pacific countries’ policies and strategies.
  • Prioritize collective efforts: a shared vision and diplomatic cooperation to ensure regional stability and prosperity.

India’s position on the Quad is clear

Despite efforts to improve relations with China, India remains active in the Indo-Pacific region. Jaishankar emphasized that India’s foreign policy not only focuses on strategic interests, but also prioritizes global stability and peace.

During this meeting, Jaishankar met with the foreign ministers of Japan, the United States, South Korea and other Indo-Pacific countries. They discussed new partnerships and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region under the “Quad+” framework.

Meet Antony Blinken

Jaishankar also met US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Both leaders pledged to work together on regional security and global stability. Blinken called India a strong and reliable partner of the United States and the two countries will work together to ensure peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

Why is this initiative important?

The Indo-Pacific region today is extremely important not only from a trade and strategic perspective, but also from a geopolitical stability perspective. India’s move is not only a strengthening of regional partnerships but also an attempt to balance China’s growing influence.

Jaishankar’s visit and his initiatives are a clear indication that India is ready to play a strong role globally. Through partnerships such as the “Quad” and “Quad+”, India has not only strengthened its diplomatic status, but also played a leading role in stability and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
