November 9, 2024: Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, currently serving time in prison for multiple sex crimes, has been hospitalized again, this time for his battle with chronic myelogenous leukemia. The 72-year-old has accused the city of “medical negligence,” saying he was denied adequate medical care while in custody, and his legal team is reportedly considering taking action against the city.

Weinstein’s attorney, Arthur Aidala, confirmed that his client was transferred to Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital on Friday after complaints about the quality of his medical care. Weinstein’s team argued that being moved out of Bellevue ahead of a retrial on both charges could have serious consequences for his health and his ability to mount a full defense. The decision to move him from the hospital highlighted a “broader agenda of more sinister outcomes through laws and inadequate medical care,” according to a representative.

Despite the claims, Weinstein clarified that he did not hold Rikers Island’s medical staff, Correctional Health Services or his own doctors responsible and said he had “deep respect” for them.

Weinstein’s health problems have added another layer of complexity to his legal troubles. He was diagnosed with cancer in October last year and faced a retrial after his conviction was partially overturned. Weinstein was originally sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 on sexual assault-related charges. In 2023, he was convicted again in Los Angeles for the 2013 rape case and received an additional 16 years in prison. His legal team is concerned that his poor health may make it unlikely that he will serve the full sentence, fearing that he may not make it through prison.

Once one of the most powerful men in Hollywood, the former movie mogul has become a central figure in the #MeToo movement and has faced accusations from numerous women. Now, his attention has turned to a legal battle over his health care, with his team accusing New York City officials of negligence as he dealt with serious health challenges in prison.
