Bartram: The Israeli navy has captured a senior Hezbollah commander in northern Lebanon. An Israeli army official provided the information on Saturday. The official did not name the detainees but said the operation took place in the northern Lebanese city of Batroun. Earlier on Saturday, Lebanese officials said they were investigating whether Israel had captured a Lebanese captain who was taken away by a group of armed men who landed off the coast of Batlen on Friday. “The captured senior members have been transferred to Israeli territory and are currently being interrogated,” the official said.
Investigation is ongoing
In fact, two Lebanese military officers said a naval force landed in Batrun, north of Beirut, and kidnapped a Lebanese citizen. The man’s identity has not been released and he is not believed to have ties to Lebanese Hezbollah. He did not confirm whether the militants were Israeli troops. Lebanese officials said the captain may have ties to Hezbollah. Officials said an investigation was underway to determine whether the man had ties to Hezbollah or worked for Israel’s spy agency and that Israeli troops had arrived to rescue him.
Complaint to the United Nations Security Council
After Israel disclosed information about the operation, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati asked his country’s foreign minister to lodge a complaint against Israel with the United Nations Security Council. Let us tell you that even before this, Israel had conducted raids inside Lebanon to kidnap or kill Hezbollah and Palestinian officials. Candace Adel, a spokesperson for the United Nations peacekeeping force deployed in southern Lebanon, denied the accusations made by some local journalists, saying that the peacekeeping forces helped the landing troops during the operation.
