Now in India, toll collection system has been implemented through GNSS. After this, you will not have to stop at the toll gate and you will have to pay the toll through satellite system only. After this new system related to toll gate, now there is talk of that rule, through which toll was made free if there was a 100 meter long queue or more than 10 seconds of weekend time. But, many people believe that there is no such rule and this rule is never beneficial. So let’s know what is the story of this rule…

What is that rule?

Actually, this rule related to toll gates on national highways is discussed a lot and you must have read about it many times. According to this rule, it should not take more than 10 seconds for any vehicle to pay toll. If this happens, then the previous vehicle is allowed to pass without paying toll. Along with this, there is also a rule that for any reason there should not be a queue of vehicles more than 100 meters long at the toll gate. For this, there is also a yellow line 100 meters away at the toll gate.

If the queue of vehicles crosses this yellow line, then vehicles are allowed to pass through the toll gate without paying toll. That is, if the queue is long, then you can pass through without paying toll. But, you must have noticed that this rule is rarely implemented properly at any toll. So let’s know what is the truth of this rule?

What is the truth of this rule?

Let us tell you that NHAI had also issued a notification for this in 2021 and implemented this rule. But, one fact in this is that this rule is not for all tolls. This rule was only for those tolls, which are built with new design after the year 2021. Let us tell you that in May 2021, the Highway Authority started this provision for those projects where the project report was in progress and land was to be acquired for the toll plaza. In such a situation, this rule was implemented only for a few tolls.

This rule is no longer in place

However, another update has come about this rule only last month. According to a report by Business Standard, now this rule has been completely removed. That is, now no one will be allowed to go for free in case of delay or long queue at any toll. NHAI has removed this policy from its toll management guidelines. Actually, there was a lot of confusion among the people about this rule, after which it has been removed.

NHAI had received a lot of complaints regarding this, but due to some clauses in the rules, people were not able to avail the benefits. Also, NHAI says that there was no mention of this in NHAI Free Rules 2008.

What is the new system now?

NHAI has now started a live feed system to monitor traffic at toll plazas. In this, the waiting time has been considered to be 5 minutes. If someone takes more time than this at the toll gate, immediate action will be taken and it will be monitored at all times. Currently, this system has started at only a few toll gates.
