Iran has started a comprehensive investigation into the murder of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya. According to media reports, Iran has arrested more than two dozen people, including senior intelligence officers, military officers and staff at an IRGC Quds Force-run guesthouse in Tehran, where the Hamas leader was assassinated.

“The perception that Iran can neither defend its homeland nor its key allies could prove fatal,” said Ali Waze, Iran director of the International Crisis Group. Iranian officials and Hamas said on Wednesday that Israel was responsible for the killing.

Israel, which has vowed to destroy Hamas, has not acknowledged that it was behind Haniya’s death. According to two Iranian officials, the Revolutionary Guards Corps’ special intelligence unit for espionage has taken over the investigation and suspects are being sought. The intelligence unit hopes to trace the members of the murder team who planned, aided and carried out the murder.
