IPLRetention Rule: Another big update has come out regarding the retention policy of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may delay the decision on the IPL retention rule. It is believed that the retention policy may benefit Chennai Super Kings and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. But there is no clarity on this yet.

According to information circulating among IPL franchise owners and officials, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may delay the announcement till the end of the month. It should not be a surprise if the policy is made public by the time of the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) to be held in Bengaluru on September 29.

According to the Cricbuzz report, there is no direct connection between the AGM and the IPL policy. The BCCI may surprise everyone by releasing the policy in the next few days. However, the biggest assumption among IPL officials is that the announcement may take at least 10 days to two weeks. Although there has been no formal communication in this regard, it is believed that BCCI officials have indicated a delay to the franchises who recently approached them about the retention rules.

Earlier, the BCCI was expected to announce the retention policy by the end of August, as was openly stated by the board officials after the owners’ meeting in Mumbai last month.

Regardless of when the retention policy is announced by the BCCI, it is now understood that franchises may have until November 15 to finalise their retention decisions. The IPL auction, likely scheduled for December, will certainly introduce the Right to Match (RTM) option as well.

Retired players will become uncapped

The BCCI is believed to be considering a move to classify retired international players as uncapped, but it is a matter of debate whether this will have any major impact on the auction purse. This policy may not be specifically aimed at keeping MS Dhoni in the ‘uncapped’ category and helping Chennai Super Kings, as it is in the league’s interest if Dhoni plays another season.

CSK officials also say that if Dhoni decides to play next season, he will be one of their retentions, even if the BCCI allows only two retentions. Interestingly, this decision may also affect players like Sunil Narine, who retired from international cricket some time ago, last played a T20I in 2019.

However, the assumption is that uncapping retired players may not have a significant impact on the auction amount as the BCCI will deduct a percentage of the purse based on the number of retentions, allowing franchises to set the price of players without having to determine the value of each retained player, as is being done currently.
