The S4 submarine launched by the Navy is equipped with K-4 nuclear ballistic missiles with a range of 3,500 kilometers. Can be launched via vertical launch system. The first submarine of this class is the Arihant, equipped with K-15 nuclear missiles with a range of 750 kilometers. Both INS Arihant and INS Arigat are already patrolling the deep sea.
India’s first nuclear submarine “Chakra” was named S1, “Arhant” was named S2, and “INS Aligate” was named S3. Thereafter, INS Aridaman has now been named S4. The last submarine of this category was S4, recently launched by the Minister of Defense.
Focus on increasing the number of submarines
Considering neighboring countries China and Pakistan, the central government attaches special importance to the nuclear submarine program. This is why the government emphasizes on increasing the number of nuclear attack and ballistic missile submarines in the Indian Navy.
In addition, the Cabinet Security Committee has recently approved the construction of two nuclear submarines for the Indian Navy at a cost of 40,000 rupees. These submarines can be built at the Visakhapatnam Shipbuilding Centre. Private companies such as Larsen and Toubro could also participate in manufacturing. 95% of these submarines will be domestically produced. Additionally, these submarines will be different from the Arihant -class submarines. The submarines will be built under the Advanced Technology Ships project.
