The Indian Navy is enhancing its nuclear submarine capabilities. The U.S. Navy plans to establish its first nuclear submarine base within the next two years. This development will be seen as enhancing the Navy’s strategic deterrence and readiness in the Indian Ocean region. India’s nuclear submarines will be deployed in deep seas to fight against enemies. In view of this, the Indian Navy’s first nuclear submarine base is under construction.

The Indian Navy is building a strategic naval base to accommodate nuclear submarines and ships. The project, named ‘INS Varsha’, is being built near the coastal village of Rambili in Andhra Pradesh. It is expected to be fully operational from 2025 to 2026. The base will serve as a hub for the Indian Navy’s current and future submarines. India’s real threat comes from neighboring China, which has the world’s largest navy. Therefore, India has decided to expedite its nuclear submarine program to thwart any attack by China or any other enemy.

Estimated cost 350 billion rupees

Recently, Indian Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi announced that one of India’s indigenous nuclear submarines will be put into service in 2036, and the second nuclear submarine will be delivered to the navy in the next two years. The project involves the first two submarines and is expected to cost 350 billion rupees ($4.5 billion).

Increase naval capabilities

This timeline will be a major effort by India to develop its undersea capabilities against regional threats, namely the Indian Ocean region, especially against China and Pakistan. The recent commissioning of India’s second nuclear submarine “INS Aligate” is an important milestone. The submarine also conducted missile tests to ensure it was ready for operational deployment. India’s second-strike capabilities have thus been strengthened.

Very low frequency (VLF) communication station

Apart from this, the Indian Navy has also set up a new very low frequency (VLF) communication station in Telangana. The facility will enhance the command and control capabilities of nuclear submarines for long-range patrols and ensure effective communications in challenging maritime environments.

Not only that, the Indian Navy is in the final stages of a contract for three more Scorpene-class submarines, which will further enhance its conventional underwater combat capabilities. The establishment of India’s first nuclear submarine base and advancements in submarine technology have significantly enhanced the strategic capabilities of the Indian Navy. With these developments, India aims to secure its interests in the increasingly contested waters of the Indian Ocean.
