India’s home season will begin with two Test matches against Bangladesh. The first match of the Test series between India and Bangladesh will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) in Chennai on Thursday, September 19. The second Test match will be played at the Green Park in Kanpur from September 27. The Indian team led by Rohit Sharma has arrived in Chennai to further strengthen its preparations. On the other hand, the visiting Bangladesh team also arrived in Chennai on Sunday (September 15).

Chepauk is very special to India

The relationship between Chepauk and the Indian team is very old and historic. India’s first Test win (against England) in 1952 on home soil in Chennai was a milestone in Indian cricket history. This was followed by the biggest score in the history of Test cricket. In the 2016 Test against England, India scored 759/7, thanks to a brilliant innings of 303* by Karun Nair.

Prior to this, Virender Sehwag had also scored his best score (319) in a Test match against South Africa at the same venue in 2008. The capacity of Chepauk is about 38,000. The crowd here is considered knowledgeable and sportsmanlike. In 1997, when Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar set the highest ODI score with 194, the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

It also hosted the first Ranji Trophy match in 1936, when Madras played against Mysore. In 1986, a Test match between India and Australia ended in a draw, with Dean Jones playing an innings of 210. It was at this ground that Narendra Hirwani took 16 wickets and scored 136 runs on his Test debut.

India has a good track record in this regard

So far, 34 Test matches have been played at Chepauk. During this period, India has won 15 matches and lost 7. There have been 11 draws and one of them ended in a tie. Teams batting first at Chepauk have won 13 Test matches. India played its last Test match here in 2021 against England, winning by 317 runs.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, will be playing a Test match at this venue for the first time. However, in One-Day Internationals, Bangladesh did play two matches at this venue, in which they had to face defeats. Now, when India is about to play a Test match against Bangladesh, all eyes will be on stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Not only does India have a record in this regard in its favour, but they also have an advantage over Bangladesh in terms of experience. In such a scenario, the visiting team will face a lot of difficulties.
