In view of the continuous occurrence of digital arrests and online fraud-related incidents in recent days, the government has taken major measures to respond. The Union Home Ministry has formed a high-level committee to deal with digital arrests and cyber fraud. The Minister of Internal Security of the Ministry of Interior is overseeing the committee, for which a special event will be carried out. MHA’s I4C unit has contacted state police. According to sources, instructions have been given to take immediate action on the digital arrests.

Information shows that more than 6,000 digital arrest complaints have been registered this year. 600,000 mobile phones involved in online fraud and digital arrests have been blocked by the cyber department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Wing has also blocked 709 mobile apps so far. At the same time, 100,000 IMEIs involved in online fraud were blocked and 325,000 fake bank accounts were frozen.

What is a digital arrest?

Digital arrest is a new form of online fraud in which scammers impersonate law enforcement officers threaten people through audio or video calls and use arrest as a pretext to hold them digitally hostage.

Earlier this week, India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) shared a list of more than a dozen ways fraudsters commit cyber fraud in the country. This also includes “digital arrests” that defraud people by stealing their money and personal data.
