The central government has issued guidelines to air passengers regarding the use of internet services during flights. The central government issued an order today saying that during flights, passengers can only use Internet services through Wi-Fi after reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters. A central government order stipulates that passengers can only use electronic devices on aircraft above an altitude of 3,000 meters.
Why was this rule proposed?
The central government issued these directions under the Flight and Sea Connectivity Rules, 2018. Among them, mobile communication services are only allowed when the aircraft reaches an altitude of 3,000 meters in Indian airspace. Air passengers only within Indian airspace must comply with the order. The central government did this to avoid disruption to terrestrial mobile networks. The central government has given these directions in the new regulations it notified.
Flight and Sea Connectivity (Amendment) Rules 2024
Accordingly, the newly notified rules will now be known as the Flight and Sea Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024. The order states, “Notwithstanding sub-section (1) stipulating the minimum altitude in Indian airspace, Internet services through Wi-Fi shall be provided on board aircraft only when the use of electronic devices is permitted on board the aircraft.” (Reporting: Anamika Gaur)
