Dhaka: Bangladesh’s High Court refuses to ban ISKCON’s activities. The court was asked to make suo motu finding and pass an order prohibiting ISKCON from operating in Bangladesh. Earlier on Wednesday, Bangladesh Supreme Court lawyer Moniruzzaman filed an application before Justice Farah Mehboob and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury seeking a ban on ISKCON. He also called for declaration of emergency in Chittagong and Rangpur. The Daily Star reported on this.
What did the interim government say in court?
At the beginning of the hearing, Deputy Attorney General Asaduddin, appearing for the Attorney General, informed the court of the steps taken by the government. He told the court that the government’s stance on the incident was strict. At present, three cases of this case have been exposed, including one involving 13, 14, and 49 people. 33 people have been arrested so far. Six other people were also identified through CCTV. The government told the court that police were acting proactively and would take further action based on the information after interrogating the accused.
‘Satisfied with government’s actions’
Regarding the request to ban ISKCON, the judges said the government was prioritizing it. We are satisfied with the government’s actions and have full confidence in the government’s responsibilities. In this regard, the court also stated, “In our country, people of all religions are very cordial and friendly, and mutual respect and love can never be lost, so the applicant does not have to have any concerns.”

Yunus government under pressure
At the same time, we can see that despite the immediate relief ISKCON received in Bangladesh, the cloud of crisis still hangs over it. Activists from Bangladesh’s radical Jamaat-e-Islami party have continued to pressure the Yunus government to take action against ISKCON. ISKCON was also described as a fundamentalist organization during court hearings. (language)
