If Dallewal is forcibly relocated…Kanauli border farmers warn, fast to continue on day 26

Jagjit Singh Dhalewal

The farmers’ movement is intensifying on the Kanauli border in Punjab and Haryana. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been fasting for 26 days until his death, but the government has not taken any concrete steps so far. Dalwal’s health deteriorated during the campaign. He faced problems with dizziness and blood pressure, but despite this, he continued to fast. Farmers say the central government is not taking their demands seriously.

Farmers alleged that Haryana police were raiding farmers’ houses and preventing them from reaching the Kanauli border. Many roads were blocked, preventing farmers from participating in the movement in Haryana. Meanwhile, the Punjab government has built temporary hospitals at the border. Farmer leader Surjit Singh Phool said that if Dallewal is forcibly moved out, the situation may get out of control and there may be bloodshed.

Fasting to death at Kanauli border

On the 25th day of fasting, Dhalewal wrote to the Supreme Court seeking directions to the central government to accept his demand. Dallewal, 70, who suffered from cancer, went on a hunger strike to death at the Khanauri border on the Punjab-Haryana border. He wrote in the letter that his hunger strike continues in support of the farmers’ demands. He told the Supreme Court that he was grateful for their concern but the farmers’ problems were more important than their lives.

What did Dalwal write in his letter?

In his letter, Dhalewal demanded a law to guarantee minimum support price (MSP). He said the implementation of the MSP law will be beneficial to the rural economy, farmers and the country. He cited a parliamentary committee in which 31 MPs from various parties recommended the implementation of MSP. Dhalewal urged the government to respect the sentiments of farmers and the report of the parliamentary committee and formulate an MSP safeguard law.

Chani meets Dalwal

After the farmers’ press conference, Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi reached the Kanauli border and met Dallewal. Accusing the government of neglect, farmers said that when a scuffle broke out among legislators in Delhi, everyone went there to inquire about their situation, but farmer leaders here have been fasting for 26 days and no one took anything.
