The Indian aviation industry has experienced significant growth in recent years, becoming one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. As of 2023, India’s domestic air transport volume has surged, reaching 140 million passengers, a significant increase from 60 million passengers in 2013. The country’s overall passenger volume, including international travel, exceeded 341 million in 2022 and is expected to reach 520 million by 2037. Economic growth has been fueled by rising incomes, a rising middle class, improved airport infrastructure and government initiatives such as the UDAN scheme aimed at strengthening regional connectivity. India also plans to become the third largest aviation market by 2025, further enhancing its global strategic position.

As the industry grows, attracting top talent becomes critical, but retaining talent is equally important. Shine has launched an exciting new event, “Discussing Retention Strategies: Keeping Top Talent,” where leading HR and talent acquisition experts will share their insights on effective retention methods in today’s competitive marketplace. This initiative provides a unique perspective on how businesses prioritize talent management, showcasing the innovative strategies employers are using to retain their best employees. It’s a valuable resource for both employers and job seekers, providing insight into what top companies’ true differentiators are when it comes to talent retention.

To gain insights into unique strategies for retaining employees in the dynamic aviation industry, we spoke to Sukhjit Singh Pasricha, Chief Human Resources Officer, IndiGo Group. Mr. Pasricha has over 27 years of experience in various industries and has been a key figure in developing human resources strategies for B2B and B2C companies. His expertise lies in developing business-aligned HR frameworks, leading transformative HR projects and enhancing organizational capabilities through effective HR interventions. Prior to joining IndiGo, Mr. Pasricha held key positions including Head of HR and Administration at Bajaj Finance and leadership positions at Bharti Airtel, PepsiCo and Spice Communications where he was instrumental in establishing strong HR processes across the board.

Excerpts from the interview:

How do you address the aviation industry’s unique retention challenges?

Today, IndiGo operates more than 2,000 flights daily and we have significant growth expansion plans. We operate 24/7, 365 days a year. These jobs may not be as flashy or alluring as they appear. For their part, airline employees are responsible for the safety and well-being of passengers while managing fast-paced, ever-changing flight schedules. Many people work in shifts. So one area we focus on is how to keep them hassle-free. When we say “hassle-free,” it’s not just about our customers, it’s also about our employees – our internal customers. Whether it’s their commute, working conditions, or something else, we’re here to make everything smoother for them.
