Doctors saved the life of wheelchair-bound patient Shubhkant Sahu.
Doctors of AIIMS Hospital, Bhubaneswar have achieved significant achievements in the medical world. Shubhkant Sahu, 25, from Odisha’s Nayagarh district was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. His heart stopped beating for 80 minutes and was later restarted with the help of ECMO technology. This event is considered a historic achievement in the field of medicine.
On the morning of October 1, Shubhakanth was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar due to severe respiratory problems. His condition was critical, and during treatment at 10 a.m., his heart suddenly stopped beating. Doctors tried to restore the heartbeat through 40 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but were unsuccessful. In this situation, doctors have only two options. Either declare them dead or resort to ECMO technology.
ECMO saves lives
ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a special medical device that temporarily replaces the heart and lungs. Forty minutes after Shubhkant was put on ECMO, his heartbeat returned. However, it was a miracle that his heart remained stopped for a full 80 minutes.
Long term struggle and success
Shubhkant was put on ECMO for 30 hours and then put on a ventilator for observation for 2 weeks. Finally, Shubkant regained consciousness and opened his eyes. Now his condition is normal and completely healthy.
First incident in Odisha and eastern India
According to doctors at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, this is the first such case in Odisha and eastern India. This miraculous rescue has brought new hope to the medical community. The family of Shubhakanth expressed his gratitude to the doctors and all the medical staff. This incident not only inspired the medical community in Odisha but also India as a whole.
