Allahabad High Court
The Allahabad High Court has issued notice to Uttar Pradesh Sugarcane Commissioner Prabhunarayan Singh. Additionally, they have been asked to submit replies and affidavits on issues related to the sugarcane procurement center by November 29. The order was issued on a contempt petition filed by Rakesh Kumar Singh of Kushinagar and other farmers. The farmers had written to the sugarcane commissioner protesting irregularities at the cane procurement centres, but no solution was found.
Farmers are troubled as there are delays in weighing as the capacity of sugarcane to reach procurement centers is exceeded, leading to depletion of sugarcane and farmers facing losses. The court had earlier directed the Sugarcane Commissioner to issue an order in the matter by October 16, 2023, but no action was taken from his side. The farmers filed a petition in the high court claiming that due to lack of arrangements at procurement centres, their sugarcane was rotting and the farmers were suffering financial losses while they waited for weighing.
Court issues order to Sugarcane Commissioner
In this matter, the court has ordered the Sugarcane Commissioner to submit a representation to the Uttar Pradesh government and resolve the matter within a month. For non-compliance with the order, the farmers filed a contempt petition and the court issued a notice to the Sugarcane Commissioner in this regard. The court has made it clear to the cane commissioner that he should submit an affidavit before November 29 or appear in person to answer the matter.
Sugarcane commissioner summoned
The case will be heard on November 29. The Cane Commissioner has yet to respond to the matter, but the court has summoned him to hold him accountable. It will now have to be seen what steps the Sugarcane Commissioner takes in the matter and whether farmers can resolve the issues at the procurement centres.
