2024-09-24 13:10:33 : The Apple Intelligence feature is scheduled to roll out to compatible iPhone models starting in the United States in the iOS 18.1 update, which will likely roll out sometime next month. Ahead of the launch, the Cupertino-based tech giant revealed how much storage space these features will require. Details were shared in the latest iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 update. It’s worth noting that the storage requirements are quite high and may require some users to free up space in order to download and install the update.

How much storage space is required to run Apple Intelligence?

In support documentation for the recently released iOS 18.1 Developer Beta 5 update, Apple detailed the amount of device storage required to access new artificial intelligence (AI) features it showed off earlier this year. In a section titled “Supported Devices,” the company says, “Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models, and iPad and Mac models with M1 and later. iPhone Device requires 4GB storage*.”

What needs to be noted here is that in addition to the space to install the iOS 18.1 update, this 4GB of storage space is also required. This means that the next stable version of the operating system will be a pretty big update for all users. While this won’t affect those with compatible high-storage iPhone models, iPhone owners who buy the base 128GB version may find themselves short on storage.

Since there is still some time before the company rolls out the update, users should try to free up some space on their devices. This can be done by utilizing iCloud storage or an external hard drive to store large videos, photos, and other files. It’s worth noting that the support document only mentions iPhone devices and doesn’t mention other devices that will also get Apple Intelligence.

Additionally, the company emphasized that Apple Intelligence’s device storage needs will increase as more features are added in the future. Users need to adapt to this as well. In the future, this may make the 128GB iPhone models less popular, and the company may follow Samsung’s route and launch the line directly from 256GB storage and above.
