Heavy rain likely at many places in Tamil Nadu

Heavy rains hit parts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. Thereafter, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has transformed into a deep pressure area. The IMD further said that it may turn into a cyclone on November 27. Warnings were issued in many parts of the state in view of the hurricane. Affected by the rainfall, severe traffic congestion occurred in many areas of Chennai city, including OMR Road, where water accumulated on the road and traffic was affected. In addition, some flights have also been affected.

According to sources, rainfall occurred in the Cauvery delta region, including Chennai and surrounding districts of Changalpet, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, as well as the northern coastal cities of Cuddalore and Nagapattinam . Heavy rain is expected in Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Cuddalore districts. The meeting chaired by Stalin was attended by the district magistrate and Indian Administrative Service officials responsible for monitoring and coordinating rainfall-related work.

May transform into a cyclonic storm on November 27

The IMD said in a post on its social media that the pressure area is likely to move north-northwestward and transform into a cyclonic storm on November 27. Thereafter, it will move in a north-northwest direction towards the Tamil Nadu coast and touch the Sri Lankan coast in the next two days. The weather department has named the storm Fengal.

Following the weather department’s forecast, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin convened a large meeting of officials at the secretariat. During the meeting, he directed the deployment of NDRF and state teams to deal with the situation. Currently, NDRF and state teams have been sent to Tiruvallur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts.

Rescue camps and medical teams are ready

During the meeting, the Prime Minister was informed that adequate number of relief camps and teams of doctors were ready. The situation is being closely monitored. In addition to this, other arrangements were made. The CM has directed officials that people should be evacuated from low-lying areas first.

The government has advised fishermen not to go into the sea. Most of the boats have since returned to shore. Meanwhile, fishermen fishing offshore are asked to go to the nearest port. Emergency operations centers have been established at the state and regional levels and operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
