The CBI court has sent former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, to judicial custody till September 23. A CBI inquiry is going on against him in a corruption case. During his appearance in the special court, a large section of lawyers were seen raising slogans against him. The protesting lawyers were shouting demanding death penalty for him.

The protesting lawyers raised slogans and said, “Sandeep Ghosh should be hanged. He is a rapist, a murderer, a thief. Bring him here. Show his face. We are ashamed of him. If we were in his place, we would have committed suicide. Hand him over to us for just seven days. We will teach him a lesson.” In view of the violent crowd in the court premises, Sandeep Ghosh was taken to jail amid tight security.

On the other hand, a week after protesting outside the police headquarters in Kolkata’s Lalbazar, hundreds of junior doctors marched towards the Health Bhavan on Tuesday. They demanded justice for the victim and resignation of Kolkata CP and several health officials over the incident. The protesting doctors also swept the road while marching towards the health department headquarters in Sector 5 of Salt Lake.

A large number of police forces were deployed to stop the protesters. Barricades were put up on the road. The protesters have set a deadline of 5 pm on Tuesday for the state government to accept their five demands. This includes the resignation of the Kolkata Police Commissioner, State Health Secretary, Director of Health Education (DHE) and Director of Health Services (DHS).

If this is not done, they said they will stage a sit-in protest in front of the health building. One of the protesting doctors said, “We want the state government to ‘clean’ the health sector. We are carrying brooms to start a cleaning programme. We will wait till 5 pm for the state to meet our demands, failing which we will begin a sit-in protest. We are ready for talks with the government.”

After the rape and murder of a woman doctor in a seminar hall inside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, junior doctors have struck work in all hospitals in West Bengal, causing a collapse in health services. The state government has claimed that 23 patients have lost their lives due to the strike by junior doctors. Many could not be treated.

On Monday, the Supreme Court said that if the protesting doctors do not return to work by 5 pm on Tuesday, legal action will be taken against them. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday offered direct talks with the agitating doctors to resolve their grievances. She said, “The Supreme Court has requested you to return to work. I reiterate that.”
