Panic spread after a grenade and a threatening letter were found outside the house of a contractor in Mahalekai in Manipur’s Imphal East district on Sunday. The item was found stored outside the house of contractor Thokchom Shankar. Local police immediately seized the grenade and began investigating the matter. The incident is the latest example of a rise in extortion and bomb threats in the state.

Police said that in the threatening letter, contractor Shankar was asked, “Can you save the lives of your family members?” The letter and the grenade were seen by some passers-by around 6 a.m. Then, immediately report the incident to the police. Police operations continue

Manipur police have deployed a special team to investigate the incident. Currently, the case has been filed at the Xingang Police Station and a detailed investigation has been launched. Police said in a statement that the discovery of the grenades may be related to extortion activities by underground groups in the state. In addition, the police arrested six members of the underground organization PREPAK (People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangerpak) and killed another member in the Tubal area.
