Recently a 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Japan. After this, the Japanese government has warned of a megaquake. This can come at any time. That means this earthquake will be generated from the Nankai Trough present inside the sea. Due to this, big areas like Koshi, Osaka, Nagoya will be affected.

This great earthquake is being compared to the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. But it could be worse than this. Because this earthquake can be of 8 to 9 intensity or more on the Richter scale. There is a possibility of lakhs of people dying due to this. There could be a loss worth billions and trillions. This warning has been issued by Japan Meteorological Association (JMA).

What is the warning of a major earthquake?

JMA’s megaquake warning says that this will be a very big earthquake. The earth will shake badly. There will be a big tsunami. This earthquake will be unusual. Because there is a subduction zone in the Nankai Valley present in the Pacific Ocean. That is, a valley formed by a crack between two tectonic plates. Terrible earthquakes have occurred here before also.

What is Nankai Valley present in the sea?

There is an 800 km long valley under the sea from Shizuoka, west of Japan’s capital Tokyo, to Kyushu Island. Every one or two centuries, a terrible earthquake of magnitude 8 or 9 occurs in this valley. That is why they are called megathrust quakes. That means two terrible earthquakes one after the other. Meaning in pairs. Due to which a great tsunami occurs.

In 1770, all segments of Nankai Valley erupted simultaneously. Due to which Japan’s second largest earthquake occurred. Due to this, there was an explosion in Mount Fuji volcano. After this three more earthquakes occurred. In 1854, 1944 and 1946. All three were earthquakes of terrible level.

How much is at stake?

The Japanese government had said some time ago that a major earthquake of 8 to 9 intensity could occur in the next 30 years. Its probability is 70 percent. If the worst situation occurs and this earthquake occurs in the near future, then at least 3 lakh people may lose their lives. There will be a loss of about Rs 110 lakh crore.
