Uri, September 15: Residents of Galkot village in Uri subdistrict of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district have demanded the construction of a boundary wall in Rajama area.

In April, the Rajama-Kalkot (7 km) road was closed to heavy vehicle movement (HVM) after a section of it was washed away due to landslides triggered by heavy rains in the Rajama area. The landslides also damaged the boundary wall of the road.

The road closure has caused various difficulties for villagers, especially patients and students.

On July 30, the authorities cut down a century-old barberry tree in the Rajama area to ease the heavy traffic on the road.

A local delegation to Greater Kashmir told the Times that the road remains dangerous to travel on, especially for heavy vehicles, due to the absence of a border wall.

“We urge that the border wall be built as soon as possible to prevent any potential loss of life,” said Bashir Ahmed, a resident of the village.

Another local resident, Faizan Ahmed Khawaja, said there was no benefit from felling the trees. “Heavy vehicles continue to ply along this road, which is very risky,” he said.

Earlier, Greater Kashmir reported that Rs 32 lakh has been sanctioned to the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY) office in Uri for construction of boundary wall and maintenance of the road stretch in Rajama area.

However, an official of the PMGSY department in Uri said, “The construction work of the border wall will start after the elections.”
