From Rishi in the rain, some questionable football skills, THAT awkward live on air moment from Grant Shapps, and Farage’s milkshake: Most bizarre moments in the general election campaign so far

Despite the potential for a political earthquake on Thursday, many have complained that the election campaign itself has been dull.

However, it has seen some striking – and even bizarre – moments.

MailOnline has collected together some of the most memorable, from a monsoon as Rishi Sunak pulled the trigger on the poll, to the PM’s rather un-silky football skills, Nigel Farage’s milkshake woes and Ed Davey repeatedly humiliating himself in pursuit of votes.

Rishi in the rain

The PM did not have a particularly auspicious start to his campaign, as the heavens opened when he was announcing the election.

Mr Sunak’s big moment in Downing Street descended into near-farce as he became increasingly sodden during his pitch to the nation.

By the end of his speech the premier’s expensive suit was soaked through – sparking widespread hilarity on social media as he turned and squelched back to the famous black door.

He later tried to laugh off the moment, joking that he had brought an umbrella to events just in case.

Nigel Farage’s milkshake

Drama often surrounds Mr Farage, and so it was when he made his first visit to Clacton after declaring he would stand to become an MP.

The Reform leader was leaving a pub in the seaside town when a milkshake was thrown in his face.

It echoed an incident during a campaign walkabout in Newcastle in 2019.

Victoria Thomas Bowen, 25, has been charged with assault by beating and criminal damage.

Rishi’s dodgy football skills

The PM came a cropper as he tried to show off on a visit to Chesham Utd football club at the end of May.

Mr Sunak – a Southampton fan – attempted to dribble the ball around some cones, but repeatedly stumbled.

At one point he looked like he was going to trip over the ball, before finally turning and kicking it sheepishly back to one of the youngsters.

Ed Davey’s bungee jump

The Lib Dem leader has thrown dignity to the winds as he tried to get noticed in the campaign.

Sir Ed has tried his hand at paddleboarding, a water obstacle course, and thrill rides at a theme park.

But perhaps the most toe-curling stunts came today, when Sir Ed did a bungee jump – saying he wanted Brits to take their own ‘leap of faith’ by voting for him.

The former minister also took part in a Zumba class on camera, enthusiastically throwing himself around in a tight T-shirt and shorts.

Grant Shapps hangs up on live TV show

Sky News Deputy Political Editor Sam Coates was unveiling the results of a grim seat-by-seat poll for Tories when his phone started ringing.

It turned out to be the Defence Secretary, with Coates picking up and informing Mr Shapps that the survey suggested he will lose his Welwyn Hatfield seat.

Rather than engage in discussion on air, Mr Shapps simply opted to hang up.

Theresa May’s doorbell message

Security cameras on doorbells are increasingly a feature of campaigns, catching politicians unaware as they canvass.

But the ex-PM turned the video to her advantage as she left an endearing message while touring a neighbourhood in Perth.

After ringing with no answer, the outgoing MP said: ‘Hello, my name is Theresa May and I am here supporting Luke Graham, the Conservative candidate for the general election on the fourth of July.

‘As you’re not in I’ll pop a leaflet through your door.’

Jeremy Corbyn’s keepie-uppie fail

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn showed some less than silky skills in a game of keepie-uppie in June.

In a video posted on the 75-year-old’s social channels he is shown watching a young man juggle a football.

Once he completed 100 touches without the ball touching the floor he passed it to the veteran leftwinger – who promptly shonks it down the road.

Supporters likened it to an advert for John Smith’s bitter in which comic Peter Kay whacked a ball, shouting ‘Av it!’
