France attracts the post cut of ‘refugee scientists’ installed by Trump

Officials said on Thursday that the first researchers to cut the US spending by President Donald Trump would start work at a French University in June.

The University of Ex -Marsile said that its “safe place science” scheme was flooded with applicants after announcing in March, threatening to cut American scientists.

The university said in a statement, “Out of 298 applications, 242 were considered eligible and” studies are being done “for some 20 available posts.

It said that 135 applicants were American citizens, and 45 double citizens.

University President Eric Burton said he wanted to see a new position of “refugee scientists”, and more American researchers were to be welcomed in France and Europe.

A bill establishing such a situation was presented in the French Parliament on Monday by former President Francois Holland, now a deputy.

The University of Ax Marsile has previously brought 25 scientists from Ukraine, Yemen, Afghanistan and Palestinian regions under another program for researchers under threats.

The university has kept a budget separate so that each researcher received between 600,000 and 800,000 euros ($ 680,00-$ 910,000) in three years to continue his work.

It states that applicants from various American institutions including Johns Hopkins, NASA, Yale, Stanford, Columbia and Pennsylvania University.

A selection panel will be found next Wednesday, followed by distance interviews before the first scientists arrive in early June.
