Paris: France’s highest court, the Court of Appeal, has upheld an appeals court ruling that found former president Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption while he was head of state. The court said in a statement that it upheld the original verdict and sentence. Sarkozy (69) was sentenced to one year in prison. They have the right to request house arrest, during which they will wear an “electronic bracelet.” This occurs in cases where sentences of two years or less are imposed.
Served as President of France from 2007 to 2012
Former President Nicolas Sarkozy was convicted of corruption by a Paris court in 2021 and an appeals court in 2023. He once attempted to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about a legal case in which he was involved. Sarkozy served as President of France from 2007 to 2012. This is the first time in modern French history that a former president has been convicted and imprisoned for actions while in office.
Sarkozy declares innocence
Nicolas Sarkozy said in a statement posted on social media platform Be prepared to accept the grave injustice done to me. Sarkozy said he would try to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights. He again reiterated his innocence. Sarkozy is also involved in several other legal cases, but he denies any wrongdoing. (AP society)
