New Delhi: Tensions between the two countries have increased after the United States imposed sanctions on several Indian companies for allegedly supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex. India’s foreign ministry said on Saturday that New Delhi was in contact with Washington to clarify the issue. Responding to a question at a weekly press briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also said India has a “strong legal and regulatory framework” in strategic trade and non-proliferation controls.
“We are also a member of the three multilateral non-proliferation export control regimes,” he said. “To maintain India’s established non-proliferation reputation, we work with all relevant departments and agencies to ensure compliance with the export controls applicable to India. We Efforts are being made to make them aware of the regulations and inform them of the new measures being implemented that may impact Indian companies in some cases. “275 individuals and companies were sanctioned for allegedly supporting Indian institutions, 15 of them from India.
US imposes ban on several companies, including those from India
The U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement on Thursday that it also imposed sanctions on Chinese, Swiss, Thai and Turkish companies that provide advanced technology and equipment to Russia. In addition to disrupting global piracy networks, the operation also targeted domestic importers and producers of critical commodities and other materials for Russia’s military industrial base, the statement said. “We have seen reports related to U.S. sanctions,” Jaiswal said on Saturday. “We are also in contact with U.S. officials for clarification.” (Language)
