External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met the foreign ministers of the Quad countries and reiterated the group’s commitment to immediate reform of the UN Security Council through written talks. The G-4 countries include Brazil, Germany, India and Japan.

Jaishankar arrived in the US on an official visit and met Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday.

The Quad countries support each other’s bids for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.

India has been at the forefront of efforts to reform the Security Council for many years, saying that the 15-nation Security Council established in 1945 is not suitable for the goals of the 21st century and does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. A polarized Security Council is also unable to respond to current peace and security challenges. Council members are divided over conflicts such as the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war.

Jaishankar also held talks with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil on Monday on other issues such as energy and economic cooperation.
