The Madhya Pradesh State Election Commission successfully conducted paperless voting at a booth in the panchayat by-election in Bhopal district as a pilot project and recorded 84 percent voting. For the first time in the country, Madhya Pradesh SEC used a paperless booth for voting at polling station-295 Ratua Ratanpur Gram Panchayat of Berasia development block on Wednesday.

Abhishek Singh, Secretary of the State Election Commission, said that the paperless booth scheme has been made with the aim of conducting a simple, smooth and transparent voting process in panchayats and urban bodies. 26 forms are filled for completing all the processes and reporting at the polling booth in the Panchayat elections. If there is a mistake in these, disputes arise and court cases are also filed.

He said that these forms are being digitized by creating paperless booths. Its first experiment was done in Ratua Ratanpur, which was completely successful with 84 percent voting. In the paperless process, signatures and thumb impressions were recorded electronically for voter identification and voting records.

Voting percentage and ballot paper accounting were also done online. Voting percentage was obtained online every two hours on all platforms. He said that after the voting is over, the ballot paper accounting will also be made available to the candidates and polling agents on their e-mail IDs.

The election officer said that work is being done at both hardware and software levels to realise the concept of paperless booth, so that in future this system can be implemented at polling stations across the state.
