“First, let’s tear open the box, and then… take out these body parts!” This all happened in the autopsy room

When we hear the names of morgues and autopsy rooms…all kinds of images come to mind. If it were necessary to go to this room, few would have the courage to go there. People get scared when they see the dead bodies, or they run away because of the bad smell… but some people are surrounded by these dead bodies all day long. Handling corpses is their profession and dissecting corpses is their livelihood. In this case, today we will tell about the life of a coroner’s assistant, for whom someone’s body is like an object…

Who is an autopsy assistant?

An autopsy assistant is a position that works in an autopsy room. Their job is to assist doctors who perform autopsies. They work with and provide doctors with information about the body. Thereafter, doctors conduct examinations and prepare autopsy reports. Their job is to open the body, report it to the doctor, and then package it properly. They worked on the corpses all day long.

A corpse is just an object…

To the coroner’s assistant, the body is just an object. About her job, autopsy assistant Manju Devi said that for her, dissecting corpses is a job that has nothing to do with her emotions. Let us tell you that Manju Devi has conducted more than 20,000 autopsies so far. He told Lalantop in an interview that many generations of his people have been doing the same work and now his son is doing it too. First, our father-in-law’s grandfather did this work, and then we continued doing it for generations.

Let’s open our chest first…

Manju Devi narrates her work, “First we move the body inside and cut off its clothes. After that, first the chest of the body is cut, then the abdomen and finally the skull is opened. After that, the doctor prepares a report, Then we stitched the body up again and packed it up and returned it.

You can tell the cause of death at a glance

He said: “They treat each case differently and cut up the body depending on the injuries etc. You can tell how the death happened by looking at the body. If there was a head injury, there were blood clots in the head; If there is a chest injury, there are broken ribs or bleeding, that’s how you can tell by looking at it. For example, if someone is hit by a train, carbon will be found in the body, and if someone is killed and falls on the tracks, it will be normal. cutting marks.

Don’t you feel scared?

Manju Devi has been doing this work since 2000. Talking about feeling scared in the autopsy room, she said she no longer felt scared but was working in it alone. He said it felt a bit strange the first time he did it, but now it has become a habit and a compulsion. They did this to raise their children because their husbands were long dead. Now we just treat it as a job and do it.

How difficult is it?

Manjudevi said: “The autopsy room lacks some facilities, so there are some difficulties.” For example, the autopsy room should have air conditioning, water supply system, lighting and other facilities. In addition to this, there were difficulties in society before, and people did not think that what we were doing was correct. But now we have become a habit.

Are some parts sometimes retained?

In fact, after the autopsy, the entire body was packed. However, in some cases, parts of the body are not packed inside when sutured, but remain on the outside. Manju Devi told us that this happens only in case of poisoning. Back then, body parts weren’t packaged to check for poisons, etc.

How much money can you get?

If we talk about money, autopsy assistants are paid on a daily basis. Manju Devi told me that her daily salary is 380 rupees. However, these are not discovered every day. If there is not even one autopsy in a day, then the money for that day is not received. The money will be received on the day of the autopsy. The special thing about this is that even if more than one autopsy has to be done in a day, you will get only Rs 380 for one. Whether it is an autopsy or five cadavers, only 380 rupees will be paid per day, and no fee will be paid on days when there is no autopsy. Meanwhile, Manju Devi is also fighting for her permanent status, which she has not had for a long time.

The dead man opened his eyes…

Manju Devi once told her story – “Once, the corpse’s eyes opened again and again.” I closed my eyes several times, but they remained open. I closed his eyes tightly and told him to stay calm, you are a dead body.
