In the Haryana elections, the statements of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders are increasing the troubles of the party. First Kangana Ranaut commented on the farmers’ movement, now the President of the Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has commented on the wrestlers’ movement. Brij Bhushan had opened a front against Olympian Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who were the faces of the wrestler movement against him. Ever since Vinesh-Bajrang joined the Congress, Brij Bhushan was continuously giving harsh statements about both of them. After Kangana, now the BJP leadership had to rein in Brij Bhushan’s statements as well.
The BJP leadership has given strict instructions to Brijbhushan not to make any statement regarding Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia. The party leadership gave these instructions because of the Haryana elections. The leadership feels that Brijbhushan’s statements regarding Vinesh and Bajrang may backfire. The party leadership does not want any leader to make any statement which may have a negative impact on the vote bank of the BJP. After the entry of Vinesh and Bajrang in the Congress, Brijbhushan is seeing an opportunity on the pitch of the wrestler movement and he was thinking of turning the wind in favor of the BJP by giving open statements, how can his same statements be a cause of trouble for the BJP?
1- Women vote bank
Women are called silent voters of BJP. Even amidst the talks of Jat-farmer’s displeasure, BJP is expecting a hat-trick in Haryana, and the trust in the women vote bank is being said to be the main reason behind it. Brij Bhushan was making such statements in an attempt to corner Vinesh and Bajrang which could hurt the sentiments of women voters. Brij Bhushan recently mentioned the context of Mahabharata and Draupadi and said, “Five thousand years ago a Mahabharata took place, in which the Pandavas had put Draupadi at stake. Today again Bhupendra Hooda put our sisters and daughters of Haryana at stake for the Haryana elections and the main characters who came out were Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia.”
Attacking Bajrang Punia, he said, “What is the status of Bajrang Punia that he will talk to me? The man who used his wife, only for the post of wrestling association, used his wife for politics and Congress.” Vinesh is also a woman and such statements of Brij Bhushan could make BJP uncomfortable on the pitch of women politics. It is worth noting that there are a total of 2 crore 2 lakh 24 thousand 958 voters in Haryana. Among them, there are 95 lakh 12 thousand 574 women as compared to 1 crore 7 lakh 11 thousand 926 men.
2- Games and players
Brij Bhushan had said, “Vinesh was not even entitled to go to the Olympics, she had usurped the right of another player in the Olympics. She went to the Olympics by usurping the right of the girl who defeated her in the trials and by creating a ruckus. So whatever happened to her was good and she deserved it.” The way Vinesh, who was disqualified before the final match in the Olympics, got emotional support in Haryana, such statements of Brij Bhushan were also making BJP workers in Haryana uncomfortable. While the BJP is promoting the campaign of the central government like Khelo India as a big achievement, it is working on a strategy to get people associated with the sports world and players to stand in its camp. In such a situation, so that the party’s campaign is not affected by such statements, this is also being cited as a reason behind advising Brij Bhushan to avoid making statements.
3- Jat-farmer sentiment
Jats and farmers are already angry in Haryana. Kangana Ranaut, MP from Mandi seat of Himachal Pradesh, added fuel to the fire. The BJP’s attempt to douse the fire of Jat’s anger by giving tickets to 13 Jats against 14 OBCs could have been dented by Brij Bhushan’s statement. Vinesh comes from a Jat family and the Khap had also honored her by presenting gold medals, maces, etc. The interference of Khap in Haryana’s politics is not hidden from anyone. If Brij Bhushan keeps giving such statements and the Khap Panchayats rally in favor of Congress on the pretext of Vinesh, then the electoral path for BJP can become even more difficult. The BJP leadership is aware of this.
BJP supporters also believe that Vinesh and Bajrang will make an impact
In a survey on the impact of Vinesh and Bajrang’s entry into Congress, 41 percent people have said that this will give a boost to the Congress. 21 percent people believe that Vinesh-Bajrang’s political entry will have a minor impact and 23 percent people are of the opinion that it will have a minor or no impact. Among the people who believe that Congress will get a boost from this, there are also 23 percent people who voted in favor of BJP. 24 percent voters of the ruling party are of the opinion that this will have a minor positive impact. A question was also asked in the survey whether Vinesh’s entry into Congress will dent her image? To this, 40 percent people answered yes and 40 percent people answered no. Among those who answered yes, the number of BJP supporters is 50 percent and 31 percent supporters of the party answered no.
