Bangalore: A case has been booked against BJP MP Tejasvi Surya and editors of some Kannada news portals for spreading fake news. Surya and others were accused of spreading false news by linking a farmer’s suicide case to a land dispute with the Waqf Board, police said in a release on Friday. On November 7, Surya shared news from these news portals on ‘X’ claiming that a farmer in Haveli district allegedly committed suicide after learning that his land had been acquired by the Waqf Board.
Surya later deleted the post
Tejasvi Surya in his post blamed the Karnataka government and said, “Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Housing, Waqf and Minority Development Minister B. Zameer Ahmed Khan Creating a disastrous situation in the state which is becoming increasingly difficult to stop, the MP later deleted the post after the Haveli District Police Inspector General termed the news report as fake news.
“No such incident has come to light”
“The information shared is false,” the police chief said. “No such incident has come to light.” The farmer mentioned here, Rudrappa Channappa Balikai, reportedly committed suicide on January 6, 2022. He is said to have committed suicide due to debt and crop losses. He said the Adar police station has registered a case under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code and has submitted a final report.

A senior police officer said, “Based on a complaint posted by a police officer at the social media monitoring cell of Haveli district police station, the Kannada Duniya Electronic Newspaper” and Editor of “Kannada News e-Newspaper” and Tejasvi Surya A case has been registered against him for “making, publishing or broadcasting any statement with the intention of making any false statement”. He said that the FIR has been registered at the CEN (Cyber Crime, Economic Offenses, Control of Narcotics) police station in Haveli district.
